Importance of a domain name to SEO?

September 6, 2009

When it comes to Search Engine Optimization, choosing a domain name can have a huge benefit!

As many of you may know, SEO work consists of many different Internet Marketing tasks effectively creating a layered effect towards a successful website. Website Design is just one aspect. A websites design needs to be eye catching and with a clear ‘call to action’ path. For some, this may be a contact page to generate a sales lead, for others it might be geared towards an ecommerce checkout. Whichever the webmasters goal for website visitors, the domain name is an important part of the equation. An easy to remember, descriptive and relevant domain name is ideal.

The search engines optimization algorithms run on a number of parameters, those among them being the domain name. Domain names are obviously an integral part of all search engine page indexing.

Should for instance there were to be a new website design project for an Accountants firm in Milton Keynes, called ‘Milton Keynes Smith & Brown Partners Accountancy UK LLP’. The proposed domain name for this company being:

www.smithandbrownaccounts.co.uk

Say this company wished to market themselves to the Milton Keynes area for ‘MK Accountants’ and ‘Accountants Milton Keynes’. It would therefore make sense for a domain name along the lines of:

www.mkaccountants.co.uk

Straight away the Search Engines will index ‘MK’ and ‘Accountants’. With very little SEO work from here the holy grail of  Top10 Google search engine ranks may very well be a simple matter of a little creative Internet Marketing and relevant Link Building.

Take www.seohowto.co.uk as another example. SEO Howto is a fairly new site, especially comparison to many SEO companies who have been working in Internet Marketing for many years. Having worked in Internet Marketing and Search Engines Optimization for a number of years, I have created this website to exhibit the benefits of the many varieties of SEO tasks.

Based in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, www.seohowto.co.uk has ‘Aylesbury, Bucks’ in its Meta Description purely for the benefit of indexing. This is so that within the SERP (Search Engine Results Page) ‘Aylesbury, Bucks’ is mentioned within the listing description. The word ‘Aylesbury’ is further mentioned in the footer of each page of the website. No other page at the moment has these keywords.

If you were to search the keyphrase ‘SEO Aylesbury’ in Google (at the time of writing – September 2009), SEO Howto is currently number 7 after just 1 week of the website going live! The keyphrase ‘SEO How to’ is listed again, after just one week at number 72 globally out of 61,700,000 indexed pages. Given the fact however that there are less than 80 inbound links to the site and this is after only 1 week, I am sure you would agree that it is quite impressive.

A similar check on Yahoo shows ‘SEO Aylesbury’ currently at number 4 on the first SERP. The keyphrase ‘SEO Bucks’ on Yahoo is currently number 34.

This is proof positive in my opinion that the domain name and a very very small amount of SEO work can go a huge way to providing global exposure, even further for local. The further localised you make your Internet Marketing, the greater the results will be.

As I have said previously, the domain name is only one part of the equation, albeit an important one. Couple a well thought out domain name with effective Link Building, Search Engine Optimization and Internet Marketing and you will be well on your way to a successful website.
